|Re: Turkey ships arms to Syria rebels with Idlib offensive possibly on hold|
France, Britain, and Germany ran simulated flight interceptions today to deter Russian planes from entering their airspace. Any pre-emptive strategy by Russia to help Syria just went out the window. Everything now is based on whether or not Syria and Russia believe the US or Turkey will directly retaliate with military force. I think a heavy gas attack will neutralize the rebel threat pretty significantly even with the help the rebels are getting. It may take a direct attack from the US to ward off Assad's regaining of Syria should Russia continue to aid Assad. While Russia is vigilant of US retaliation against Syria, the US is vigilant of Russia deciding to deploy more troops to Syria for a complete military operation to defend Syria. This would result in the much-feared escalation of the crisis. Syria is a major strategic point for Russia and Iran. The overthrow of Assad eliminates a lot of Russia's middle east influence and cuts off Iran's aid to Hezbollah.
